mid-century motel & street signs
Once a major part of the highway landscape, these huge colourful signs, lit by neon and thousands of lightbulbs, are now abandoned relics of our North-American post-WWII commercial boom. Unfortunately, in our culture they were later seen as an outdated garish eyesore before being re-appreciated as a historical period piece. Thankfully, some of these signs, particularly in the arid U.S. Southwest, still remain in all their decaying beauty. I appreciate these signs for their one-off artistic creativity, craftsmanship and ‘out-there’ design and imagery. I would go so far as to say that they are an art form.
